1st place at the Gerroa event!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, 1st place at the Gerroa event!! totally stoked.

It was a great weekend for me and I was really happy with my wave sailing. I was really focusing on my positioning and wave selection during the final and managed to get some decent rides despite the lighter conditions.

"Steve-O Hackey employed some clever contest strategy to keep the attention of the judges. Although Dan was slightly ahead on waveriding, Steve pulled off more complex freestyle on the wave and combined it a clean Ponch off a lucky gust to take the win in the first expression session."

Sadly I won't be around for the next event as I'm flying back to the UK, but I could have been sure of an end of season podium finish.!! maybe next time!!!!!
Still waiting for event pics.............pics above courtesy of 'Laura slater photography'.

2nd place at the NSW Wave sailing event!!

It was an awesome weekend of wind here in Sydney. The competition was held down in Gerroa (about 2 hours south of the city) which is an epic down the line spot.
The waves were lacking but the wind was firing and so thats all we needed for the event to run.
I sailed quite well, landing some big scoring moves. I was up against the Australian national champion and so was pleased to finish in 2nd place overall in the pro's.
The next event is in two weeks and so I'm hoping for another good result.
I have been here in Sydney for 6 weeks now and its been windy about 90% of the time!!!!!!!!!

Windsurf Instructor gets pro sponsorship

Name: Steven 'Steve-o' Hackey
Age: 29
Occupation: Water sports instructor
Sail number: K-119
Sponsors: Fishburn, Sunwise, Boardwise, Club Vass
Windsurfing top tip: Go fast. More speed into manoeuvres will help you to de-power your sail and make it feel light.

It wasn't until the age of 23 when I graduated from University with a degree in spatial design that things really changed for me.

I decided I wanted to pursue a life on and around the water so I trained up as a Windsurfing Instructor back in the UK. Once qualified, the doors began to open for me and I was soon working and travelling around the world teaching the sport.

Six years on and I'm still living the dream, getting paid to work in fabulous locations and doing a sport that I love.

This last year has been a particularly good one for me. After finishing the season as Club Vass beach manager last summer, I decided to really try and market myself as an influential figure within the windsurfing world.

During the winter months I created my own website in order to increase my exposure.
That worked quite well as I managed to attract interest from two new sponsors: Fishburn fishburnboarding.com a clothing company based in Sydney Australia, they are now supplying me with boardies, T-shirts and other accessories and Sunwise sunwise.co.uk a sunglasses company based in the UK.  They are hooking me up with a selection of quality lenses for the coming seasons.

I will be working hard to help promote and expose these brands as I believe both have great products.

Last winter I spent a couple of months freestyle training in Margarita ( a small island off the north coast of Venezuela) which was incredible. Excellent winds, warm waters and the chance to windsurf with some of the best sailors in the world.

This summer I have been in Greece working for Flying Fish at Club Vass. It's  a great place to windsurf with regular windy days and flat water, so perfect for freestyle.

This coming winter 2009-2010 I'm heading back to Sydney to work for Flying Fish Australia, training the next breed of windsurfing instructors.   Sydney has all the sports, and I'm looking forward to going back and being part of that again!

If you are signing yourself up for a Flying Fish Windsurf or Dinghy Instructor course then I look forward to seeing you on the water ...!
